Donyell, Seraiah and Devon

With each session shot for my Natural Hair series I’m just as excited as the first. And this recent session was no different as I was blessed with the opportunity to photograph a dear high school friend Donyell and her daughters. I’ve been wanting to photograph her for some time but our schedules just didn’t sync up until recently during the memorial day holiday. I wanted to keep the session simple as she stated she was nervous about being on camera and filmed. So I opted to photograph her at her parents house as I wanted the environment to be absolutely comfortable for her. Especially knowing she was bringing her daughters with her both whom are also natural.

Once we found a place in the yard to shoot I spoke with Donyell about what we’re shooting and not to put too much into just be natural (no pun intended). Ivan and I decided to change the format where I shoot first and then video. Instead he recorded me while I was photographing her and the girls and when it came time for the interview I photographed them more in a photo-journalistic style while the video ran. And I’m glad we took this approach as Donyell was very relaxed and her story was awesome. She went into why she became natural she even shared her story about having alopecia which was both informative and moving.

What is Alopecia
Alopecia areata (AA) is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the scalp, especially in the first stages, it is sometimes called spot baldness. In 1–2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (alopecia universalis). Conditions resembling AA, and having a similar cause, occur also in other species.

Next in the interview chair was her daughter Seraiah and this little lady had NO issue sharing her natural hair journey. She started on why she loves her hair and how she chooses to style it and even let our audience know that she has no tolerance when it comes to what others may think negatively about her hair.

When it comes to my hair I will not allow anyone to be disrespectful as I do have ADD and will tell them, I’m not to be played with when it comes to my hair!Seraiah Mack

Her baby sister Devon was more laid back but just as informative as she shared that at times some kids do pick on her mistaking her shells in her locs for knots. But she is quick to let them know that they are shells to enhance her hair and show her style.  Devon also shared with us that when her mom asked her what did she want to do with her hair she same style as her.

Now that’s what’s up!

I’m a man that’s the perfect combination of intelligence, wit , talent, depression, humility, passion, determination, handsomeness, conceit, strength, rationale, and generosity. Yeah, that sounds about right. Other than my love for photography, I have an uncanny knack for being a smart ass, but I don’t mean any harm. I just have minimum control over what I’m thinking and how rapidly it makes it out of my mouth! Otherwise I’m one hell of a friend and I love to entertain.
